| Description: | Railroad and Reunion Days is Saturday, October 6st, 2012 and features a Grand Parade as well as a Children's Parade. Come be in the parade that winds through town or be a spectator cheering them on. The day will start off with a 5K Race at 9:00 am. There are always fun things to do and lots of good things to eat, so bring the whole family and have a great day together. The traditional main street parade starts Saturday at 12 noon, featuring local groups, politicians and bands, plus the colorful Seafair pirates. Grand marshal for the parade will be announced sometime in September. Local businesses and street vendors will be ready for the crowds, a carnival will be in town the whole weekend and the Granite Falls Historical Museum is a must see for visitors and locals alike. Railroad Days celebrates the era of steam trains that puffed through town beginning in 1892 when the Everett and Monte Cristo Railroad reached the town. By the next year the tracks reached to the mountain gold mining town of Monte Cristo. Gold mining lasted only a decade but logging trains were a familiar sight for many more years, along with passenger trains that brought tourists from Seattle and Everett to the famous Big Four Inn resort in the shadow of Big Four Mountain. Today, only the resorts stone fireplace remains, standing like a sentinel at the entrance to the trails to the Big Four ice caves. Railroad Days, a 40-year-old event held the first Saturday in October, includes parades, and activities such as bed race, duck race, egg toss, petting zoo, talent show, karaoke, live entertainment and much more. Railroad Days was started to commemorate Granite Falls history and the great railroads which once brought ore, precious metals and timber through our mining and lumber town. The event combines with reunions at Granite Falls High School, bringing back past alumni to meet old friends and renew past acquaintances. It was started 40+ years ago by one of the high schools English teachers and has been a community highlight ever since. | ||
